2017. Passenger night trains in Europe: the end of the line?

TRASPOL has supported Steer Davies Gleave for the study titled “Study on passenger night trains in Europe: the end of the line?” prepared on behalf of the European Parliament and having the goal to present the state of affairs and the challenges ahead for overnight railway services.

TRASPOL has focused on long-distance coach services in terms of characteristics and potentialities with a particular focus on overnight national coach services. The research identified the main regulatory elements and peculiarities of the different European markets in terms of typologies of services offered, characteristics of the operators and level of competition. In addition, TRASPOL carried out a series of interviews with operators and / or trade associations to collect detailed information on the market and on critical issues to date in the various national contexts (regulatory constraints, barriers to entry, opportunistic behavior of the former monopolists).
